Microsoft Build 2018: What’s new in Xamarin.Forms 3.0

Microsoft builds 2018 arrives with lots of things for many developers. It also has some exciting news related to Xamarin also. Below are some latest news related to Xamarin news from build which will delight developers.

Hyper-V Android Emulator Support:

The google android emulator which was announced in April this year is compatible with Hyper-V when working on Windows 10. This was an amazing work done by windows Hyper -V team with the help of Xamarin developers team. This emulator helps the developers to use the Google’s hardware -accelerated Android emulator side-by-side with all other Hyper-V technology.

Xamarin.Forms 3.0:

The new version of Xamarin brings new layout and more styling power, with features like Visual state manager, Flex layout, Stylesheets, and Left-to-right support. Xamarin.forms 3.0 fixed some bugs and have some amazing community contributions. This has some fantastic improvements up.

Visual Studio Tools For Xamarin:

Xamarin.Forms XAML IntelliSense:

The Xamarin.Forms developers who use Visual Studio 2017 version 15.7 will find some vastly improved IntelliSense experience. This now powered by the same Intellisense engine from Windows Presentation Foundation and from Universal Windows Platform. This has many improvements like binding/commanding completion, resource completion, markup extension completion and is also enhanced by light bulb suggestion, code navigation, and linting.

Automatic iOS Device Provisioning:

The Xamarin continues to make things easier and simpler for developers by introducing automatic iOS device provisioning in Visual Studio 2017 version 15.7. This has many features like requesting a development certificate while generating a signing key, also adds a device in the developer center and also creates a provisioning profile. This all happens within Visual studio.

Improved Android SDK Management:

The main problem with Android SDK was to figure out the SDK to be installed, So the Xamarin developers added a new feature that takes guesswork. The automatic option is off by default but the user can enable it easily by going to the Tools > Options > Xamarin > Android Settings > Enable Auto Install Android SDKs

Updated iOS & Android Project Templates:

The project templates are the important part of app building and are very helpful, So the Xamarin developers rebuilt the native iOS and Android project templates to make them easier to find the file.

Platform improvements:

Xamarin.Android:-

Xamarin is distributing the Android Oreo SDK, Android SDK tools 26, and the Xamarin Android device manager in Visual Studio 2017 and Visual Studio for Mac.

Xamarin.iOS:-

The Xamarin helps the macOS, WatchOS, tvOS applications in delivering new features and benefits like Smaller Application, Faster application, Reduced Memory Usage.

Smaller application:- The linked Xamarin.iOS.dll is 30-50% smaller since the information needed only at build time can be removed. This allows the linker to remove more code than before since less code is being referenced.

Faster application startup:- More registration work is done at build time instead of runtime. Removing the need to use (slow) reflection on custom attributes to register types and methods.

Reduced Memory Usage: With this work, we also reduced the memory required for applications. The initial (startup) memory requirement is down 30% for a minimal application and 20% for extensions, making it easier to create extensions where iOS imposes memory limits.

Update today:-

Xamarin.forms 3.0 is available now on NuGet. You can also get the visual studio 2017 version 15.7 update today via the notification hub in visual studio. Also be sure to download the Xamarin Android Device manager for Android Oreo.
